Adventure awaits after announcement of Homecoming themes

This year’s Homecoming themes have an overarching theme of “a Land Far, Far Away.”  The themes were announced Aug. 21 at the Back to School Movie Night.

The senior class will bring Saratoga the story of distant planets through “Star Wars”; juniors will be flying on the second star to the right and “Straight on ‘til Neverland”; sophomores will take a journey through “Winnie the Pooh’s Hundred Acre Woods”; and freshmen will be exploring the “Lost City of Atlantis.”

Head Homecoming commissioner Eileen Toh came up with the idea last year during her experience with the homecoming and Spring Fling commission, inspired by multiple movies and books.

“I wanted to do something with fictional lands because they  give classes so many creative ideas for decorations,” Toh said. “Since the themes aren’t strictly about the movies or books that they come from, students get the chance to come up with creative skits.”

The senior class hopes to exceed last year’s quad day.

“Despite [the amount] of work we had [last year], we were able to put together an incredible display and beat the seniors,” said senior Marcus Emery. “Now that we’re the seniors, I guess the pressure’s on.”

Junior Rachel Won, who is in charge of the Homecoming script for her class, said that the juniors want to improve their dances and the cohesiveness of the plot for their quad day skit.

“We want to prove that we can pull off a better Homecoming than last year even though we’re busy juniors,” Won said.

Sophomore Kyle Wang said his class plans to put on a more creative show, one that will “defy expectations.”

Freshman Joan McCarthy, who is involved in choreography and the skit, plans on combining the legend and movie of Atlantis.

“I don't want to be another ‘freshman failure’,” said McCarthy. “I'm taking the knowledge and experience from my two older brothers [alumni Jack McCarthy and junior Raymond McCarthy], and I'm watching past quad days.”
