Column: Donald Trump’s beef with Arnold Schwarzenegger distracts from political priorities

Donald Trump, world renowned drama king/president of the U.S., has had controversy and uncertainty surrounding him long before his presidency. He cemented his fame with the hit reality TV show “The Apprentice” in 2004 and has since ridden his train of controversial statements and opinions all the way to the Oval Office.

It seems like his old reality show is coming back to haunt him. After Trump left for the White House, Arnold Schwarzenegger, the former California governor and actor, took over his show as the “boss” in a spin-off known as “Celebrity Apprentice” (essentially the same as its predecessor except the contestants are celebrities).

Recently, Schwarzenegger announced he will not continue with the show due to Trump’s lingering notoriety surrounding it. Trump’s continued involvement in the show as an executive producer caused multiple sponsors, contestants and millions of viewers to boycott it.

Immediately, a Twitter war began with Trump poking at Schwarzenegger for being the reason for the show’s poor ratings.

Schwarzenegger struck back, saying, “I wish you the best of luck and I hope you’ll work for ALL of the American people as aggressively as you worked for your ratings.”

Although at first glance, this “war” can be seen as humorous and entertaining, it certainly is alarming that the president carries out his arguments so publicly and shamelessly.

Perhaps these sort of frivolous rivalries also serve to distract the public from what is truly newsworthy.

With pressing world issues looming over Trump’s desk such as hostilities with North Korea and devastating hurricanes, one can only wonder how he has time to engage in this sort of rhetoric over such trivial matters.

Trump should give up his TV obsessions if he is truly serious about his job. After all, if his own approval ratings don’t improve, perhaps his show will be canceled by voters in 2020.
