Girls’ basketball: Team fired up from Firebirds Tourney

January 10, 2012 — by Sanj Nalwa

The girls’ basketball team is currently in the middle of the El Camino League competition.

The team beat Milpitas 60-39 at home on Dec. 21, to kick off El Camino League play.

The team recently participated in the Monte Vista Tournament, finishing in first place with a 3-0 record. They defeated South San Francisco 42-22 on Dec. 8, Pioneer 43-36 on Dec. 9 and Newark Memorial 53-26 on Dec. 10.

“We were very excited to win considering that we had gotten to the finals in our last tournament and fallen short to second place,” junior forward Hannah Johnson said. “So we were really pumped to beat out some tough teams and get first place.”

Earlier, the team came second to Wilcox in the Firebirds Tournament.

The team beat Silver Creek 61-40 on Nov. 29 and Branham 57-43 on Nov. 30, but ultimately lost to Wilcox 40-24 on Dec. 1 in the finals.

“Wilcox has been the best team we’ve played so far,” Johnson said. “[Sophomore guard] Dahrini Ramaswami has had a really good tournament.”

Johnson said although the game schedule has been tough, it is really going to help the girls when they enter leagues.

“We have have our five toughest games this pre-season coming up,” Johnson said. “It has been challenging to play so many games this past two weeks, but it is really getting us ready for leagues.”
