Girls' Tennis takes fifth at Peachtree tournament

September 15, 2011 — by Evaline Ju

Not as good as last year, but good enough.

The girls’ tennis team took fifth place out of 120 teams on Sept. 10 at the California High School Girls’ Tennis Classic in Fresno, a tournament they won the previous year, after a 3-4 loss to Santa Barbara High in the quarterfinal round. They made up the loss with a 4-3 win over St. Francis High School in the consolation final.

The team had won 4-3 over Granite Bay High School earlier the same day to reach the consolation final. Key players number one singles player senior Crystal Yen and number one doubles player Sarah Lum were not present for the second day of matches due to a tournament and the ACT, respectively. Sophomore Kalyani Narayan stepped up to play the number one singles position with wins in close matches, and junior Niharika Bedekar filled Narayan’s former number two singles position.

The doubles teams had difficult matches against Santa Barbara, with number one doubles pair seniors Lisa Asai and Lum losing a close game in the match tiebreaker and number three doubles pair juniors Cori Posadas and Evaline Ju scraping a win in the match tiebreaker.

The team began the league season with a 7-0 win over Mountain View and improved their record to 5-1. The girls will play Palo Alto on Sept. 15.
