Reporters recall their FLASHING day at Comic Con

September 17, 2017 — by Ava Hooman, Esha Lakhotia and Muthu Palaniappan

The trio tried to sneak into Gustin’s meet and greet session when they saw that there wasn't high security around it, but gave up and left the area

As we sat in our section about 100 feet from the main stage at a Q&A featuring “The Flash” star Grant Gustin and Tom Felton, who played Draco Malfoy in the “Harry Potter” series, we waited for the announcer to let the general admission occupy the VIP section. It was practically empty with only 5 minutes left until the show. When the announcer finally said that we were allowed to enter the VIP section we had  anxiously been waiting for, a stampede of avid fans, including us, ran to the front of the auditorium, as if our lives depended on it

Amidst the jumping over chairs and pushing people out of the way, Muthu even dropped her phone and left her bag on the floor. After the chaos subsided, we went back to collect our things, buzzing with excitement from where we were sitting.

With smiles on our faces, we shared jokes about how our $50 general admission tickets had gotten us the $300 experience of sitting 15 feet away from celebrities.

This was the start of our first activity to our exciting 6-hour day at the San Jose Comic Con last April, a conference attended by 65,000 altogether. Soon, we went upstairs and explored the comic books and games part of the conference.

We were most looking forward to this panel and it made our two-hour wait and getting up at 6 a.m. completely worth it.

The beginning of the day was the most exciting for all of us as we got to see the main actors from one of our favorite shows speak. Both Gustin and Felton had amazing personalities and answered all the questions enthusiastically with responses that made us  laugh.

After the Q&A session, we made our way to the main convention center where we saw Gustin’s two adorable dogs, quickly snapping a photo with them for the gram. After seeing his dogs on his Instagram account, we all knew exactly who they were.

At the convention center, we took pictures with many Star Wars characters like Padme and Darth Vader and cosplayers dressed up as various characters.

Afterwards, we spent some time buying posters of our favorite movie stars and superheroes, as well as  playing some games to win free prizes.

Among the many activities at the center, one of the most memorable was the virtual reality experience. All three of us tried it and were very surprised because of how realistic it was.

We tried to sneak into Gustin’s meet and greet session when we saw that there wasn't high security around it, but gave up and left the area. One of the security guard caught us trying to enter, instructing us to go to the payment booth to buy the $500 tickets.

Later, we tried our luck at another part of the convention by waiting in line early for Gina Torres, actress from the hit TV show “Suits.” As the first group in line, we got front row seats to the panel. Ava and Esha even got to ask her two questions about her personal life.

All in all, our day at Comic Con was filled with lasting memories and experiences that will stay with us for a lifetime. From clutching VIP seats to speaking one on one to a respected actress, the day could not have been better spent.
