Wrestling: Falcons take first in two weight classes at tournament

January 10, 2012 — by Brandon Judoprasetijo

The wrestling team recently placed 12th out of 30 teams after competing in the Webber Lawson Tournament at Fremont High on Dec. 11.

Of the six wrestlers the team sent, senior Alfred Murabito and sophomore Graham Grant took first place in the 145-pound and 195-pound weight classes, respectively, while freshman Araad Sarrami placed fourth in the 160-pound weight class.

“It wasn’t too difficult of a tournament,” Grant said. “I think the team did really well and it was a pretty good challenge.”

Murabito won all five of his matches through pins. A noteworthy opponent Murabito defeated was Los Gatos senior Robbie Chen, who placed within the top eight at CCS last year. According to Murabito, he was fastest in most pins. In addition, Grant won two of his three matches through pins as well.

Despite the good results from the tournament, Grant still feels that the team has not reached its full potential.

“A lot of our guys still need to learn certain moves that will really help them in their matches,” Grant said. “After that happens, we’ll be a lot stronger.”

The next big challenge for the Falcons will be on Jan. 6 at the Doc Buchanan Invitational in Clovis High School. Murabito looks forward to participating in the tournament and facing off against other teams around the state.

“I’m just looking to beat the tougher competition out there and going to harder tournaments,” Murabito said.
