Students go to D.C. over break

From April 11-16, 13 students will be traveling with history teacher Matthew Torrens and Media Arts Program Coordinator Kerry Mohnike to Washington, D.C., in order to learn more about U.S. history.

“It is going to be a blast,” said Torrens. “We are going to do a bike ride, and I’ve never done that at D.C. before, so it’s going to be a lot of fun. Every trip I do I try to do something active and new, and so the bike ride is a new thing for me this year.”

Originally the trip was only open to MAP students and some of the history students. However, the cross-country journey had not been attracting enough students, so it was opened to all sophomores, juniors and seniors.

The trip costs around $1,600, which is a good deal considering all the activities incorporated, according to Torrens. On the six-day trip, the students will be visiting the site of the Battle of Gettysburg, touring the Library of Congress, watching a show at the Ford’s Theatre where President Lincoln was shot and participating in many more activities.

This will be Torrens’s eighth time taking a group of students to Washington, D.C. The students will be accompanied by four parent chaperones.
