Winter haters, vacation to Palm Springs

December 10, 2018 — by Sandhya Sundaram

Palm Springs is the ideal warm weather getaway, full of summer activities in the middle of winter.

An avid hater of winter, sweater weather and temperatures below 70 degrees, I will do absolutely whatever it takes to fool myself into thinking that it is summer when it’s December. The perfect way to do this: Flee to a warm-weather destination in the middle of the winter.

Last summer, I went on a road trip with my family to Palm Springs, the ideal destination for a tropical getaway that’s close and affordable. Whether you like relaxing in the pool, seeing astounding views, or touring national parks, there is something for you in Palm Springs.

On my trip there, we stayed at an Airbnb apartment in a country club, granting us access to multiple pools, jacuzzis, a golf course and hiking trails within our accommodations.

Initially skeptical of the too-good-to-be-true weather forecast, I packed warm sweaters, long pants and jackets. However, once we got to Palm Springs, I made my family stop to buy shorts so that I would be more suitably dressed for the warm weather.

In Palm Springs, there is an aerial tramway leads up the Chino Canyon. The views of the vast desert can be taken in by day, sunrise or night. Although my family didn’t do this because of time constraints and large lines, the photos of the scenery and views made me wish I could have experienced it.

One day, we drove to nearby Joshua Tree National Park, a huge grove filled with rock formations, hikes, views and Joshua trees that look like hybrids of cacti and shrubs. For those who love adventurous rock climbing, photo opportunities, stunning nature and national parks, Joshua Tree is the place to be.

Apart from the natural parks, warmth, and poolside relaxation, Palm Springs is also close to Los Angeles with its abundance of entertainment options.

The best part of the trip was that it felt like summer because of the completely different climate and activities. So if winter really is not your thing, instead of moping around in a blanket and miserably watching Netflix, convince your friends or family to take a road trip to Palm Springs. You won’t regret it.
