First Comedy Sportz show a hilarious success

Quick thinking and witty comebacks were on stage Sept. 14 when the school’s Improv team squared off for the first time in the Thermond Drama Center in the first of five Comedy Sportz shows this year.

The improv team separated into two groups, red and blue, and competed against each other in well-known drama games. The “referee” Sam, who is a professional comedian, supervised the two teams and made sure the jokes were audience-appropriate. 

“[For the first show] everyone was on top of it and was able to be there when we needed them to,” said senior improv member Ehrland Hollingsworth. “Everyone paid attention and worked cohesively.”

One of the games was “Foreign film dub,” in which two members from a team act out a scene but cannot speak English. They are required to speak gibberish, and the other two members have to translate the scene to tell the audience what is going on. 

Another game was “Chain Murder,” a combination of the board game Clue and the game Telephone. The captain of a team has to figure out the correct location, occupation and weapon used for a murder to win maximum points for their team.

For the next show, Hollingsworth said the improv team would try to “improve their seamwork” so the show will flow better. 

The show was about an hour and a half, including a half-time break, and was a huge success for the improv team, Hollingsworth said. The next Comedy Sportz show will be held on Nov. 15.
