This year’s Jazz Cabaret, to be held on March 1, promises the traditional night of singing and swing dancing, along with creative new additions to the jazz lineup. The event will be held in the Large Gym at 7 p.m.

All three school choirs will perform, as well as multiple jazz bands, including Jazz Band 1 and 2, the Redwood Middle School jazz band and a student jazz saxaphone group. In addition, there will be a professional guest band playing at the event, called Footnotes.

“This year, our jazz band was going to snazz things up a bit and instead of playing as one whole big band for the whole night, we were going to split and [have] Dixieland band walking around the whole room,” sophomore jazz band member Shiva Djabarri said.

Dixieland, a regular student jazz band but with “more uplifting and goofy music,” will be featured and will be accompanied by students playing clarinets and tubas to make it more entertaining.

“I think last year people had fun, but I think it would be cool to have more school involvement,” sophomore choir member Talia Clement said. “I’m excited but also nervous because our class hasn’t learned all of the songs [yet].”

Travis Gould, the jazz band director, will be having small groups perform throughout the night, which is something he’s done to “experiment with different types of instrumentation and give certain sections opportunities to demonstrate their talent, like the saxophone section.”

“One of the things thats cool about the Jazz Cab is that we have several stages, so the music keeps going throughout the night,” Gould said. “So when one group is done, the next one starts; there’s always something going on.”
