Summer movie time

Summer brings with it free time and the uncontrollable desire to fill this time binge watching movies. This summer, too many terrible movies are coming out and we are here to help you pick out which ones are actually worth your time.  

“The Fault in Our Stars”: Releases June 6

Based on the No. 1 New York Times bestseller by John Green, “The Fault in Our Stars” has garnered much attention. The trailer itself has accumulated more than 15 million views, reflecting the high expectations for the movie.

The plot follows Hazel Grace Lancaster (Shailene Woodley) and Augustus Waters (Ansel Elgort) who meet in a cancer  support group and learn to embrace what little time they have together. While people may believe some of the details in the book reflecting their relationship as well as their lives may be left out, Hank Green, author John Green’s brother, notes on YouTube that many details in the book have been pretty well reflected in the snip-its in the trailer.

“22 Jump Street”: Releases June 13 

“22 Jump Street” hopes to build on the success its predecessor, “21 Jump Street.” 

“21 Jump Street” is a hilarious and entertaining film about two undercover cops, Jenko (Channing Tatum) and Schmidt (Jonah Hill), who attend high school again in order to take down a new drug that has been circulating. 

The more recent movie focuses on the two cops’ relationship and partnership as they move to their new case at a local college. More than their ability to catch the bad guy, the movie begins to test the characters’ partnership. 

From hilarious moments to serious action scenes, “22 Jump Street” promises to excite anyone who watches it. 

 “The Giver”: Releases 8/15

Based on the award winning novel by Lois Lowry, "The Giver" will be shown in theaters this summer. In the book, the characters live in a utopian world without color and are prevented from making their own decisions. 

While their lives are still planned out for them in the movie, the movie is to be in color. With this creative difference, the film has to portray the conflict of the main character Jonas (Brenton Thwaites) in a more interesting manner. 

Although people who have read the book understand that Jonas finding out about the “real world” changes who he is, from the trailer it is difficult to understand what is actually happening. Even so, the movie shows potential to have an interesting plot and good acting.

“Transformers: Age of extinction”: Releases June 27

Another year, another Transformers movie. “Transformers: Age of Extinction” is a film directed by Michael Bay, who has directed the previous three Transformer films, and is boasting a good cast with the likes of Mark Wahlberg, playing as the main character. 

The movie, according to Bay, is to start another trilogy that is different from the previous three transformer movies. Everything sounds great then, right? The movie has a world class-action actor, lots of action and fast-paced movie scenes and a brand new story. But that isn’t the case. 

The trailer reveals that the movie has no fixed story and just shows many scenes of pointless action. 

If the previous two movies are any indication, the latest movie from the Transformers franchise is going to disappoint. Our advice: Save the $11.75. 

“The Purge: Anarchy”: Releases July 18

When the first Purge came out, it displayed a new type of a horror/thriller movie. The movie took a creative approach by creating the idea of the purge, a 12-hour period where no laws applied. The movie fails to deliver on the idea and turns out to be a C-grade movie about a home invasion. 

The sequel, on the other hand, is promising to reveal what the Purge is all about. Showcasing how people survive outside during this time, the movie may become one of the summer’s biggest thrillers. 

The movie follows a couple whose car breaks down as the annual Purge commences through their survival of the scariest 12-hour period of their life.

Even though this is still a cheap thriller movie, the “Purge: Anarchy” is going to send chills throughout the summer nights.
